The 2nd Annual Free to Breathe 5K Run/Walk and 1 Mile Walk for the benefit of Lung Cancer will be held November 6th in Ponte Vedra at Mickler’s Landing.  There are over 370 registered participants and $92,000 raised to date.

November has been designated National Lung Cancer Awareness month with special proclamations from Governor Charlie Crist and Mayor John Peyton announcing this to be Lung Cancer Awareness Month in Florida and Jacksonville as well.

Data from the National Lung Cancer Partnership indicates one in thirteen men and one in sixteen women will be diagnosed with lung cancer in America, killing more people than breast, colon, prostate, liver, kidney and melanoma combined.

Funding for breast cancer is $24,000 per death, as compared to merely $1,300 per death for lung cancer.

“We are not ‘running’ for a cure,” said Julia Stroud, “but for screening for lung disease."  With advances in medicine, breast cancer survival rate is now 89%, however, lung cancer survival is 15% and nearly 85% die in the first year after diagnosis.”

The symbol for the lung cancer movement is a translucent bracelet, signifying the goal for clear lungs.

Registration will begin at 7:00am on the day of race.  The race wll start at 8:00am, with awards of over $1,000.00 in prizes and gift certificates to the top male and female finishers.

All proceeds will benefit the National Lung Cancer Partnership’s research, education and awareness programs.
