ONGOING

Through January 9 – Prehistoric Predators – Walk alongside the dinosaurs!  Encounter a soaring Pteranodon with a 23-foot wingspan, a Maiasaura mother caring for her hatchlings, a Pachycephalosaurus, Apatosaurus, Albertosaurus and more in the limited-engagement exhibit, Prehistoric Predators.  Dinosaur models are handcrafted based on fossil records and equipped with internal computers, making them look – and sound – like the magnificent beasts that once roamed Earth! 

Wednesdays – Half-Price Half Days – Beginning at noon each Wednesday when school is in session, students receive 50% off MOSH's regular admission prices. Reduced rates are $4.00 for students 3-12 and $5.00 for students 13 and over. Students under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Discount may be applied toward college students with id.Fridays – $5 Fridays – Every Friday, come to MOSH to enjoy $5 admission and extended hours. The Museum will be open every Friday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. (Note: Additional discounts or coupons are not permitted.)

Through January 30 – People of the St. Johns – Travel back in time to learn about Northeast Florida’s first inhabitants. Guest curator Keith Ashley, Ph.D., an archeologist at the University of North Florida, has partnered with MOSH to create this new exhibit that explores the everyday life of the people of the St. Johns.  The exhibit, which contains artifacts from MOSH’s and UNF’s collections, also incorporates artwork from present-day local artist Theodore Morris who masterfully captures the essence of these native people. 

Through May 30 – Children of the Universe – Embark on a journey around the solar system!   This innovative exhibit created by local artist Don Trousdell fuses art and science to tell the story of our solar system through the eyes of mythological children living on the planets, sun and moon.  Each original painting explores the fascinating science and mythology associated with these giant orbs.  On display in the Wachovia Community Conference Room.

NOVEMBER

November 11 – 14 – Grand Opening of the Bryan-Gooding Planetarium – Join MOSH for a celebration that is out of this world!  The new Bryan-Gooding Planetarium offers visitors total-immersion entertainment in a 360-degree theater at super-resolution four times better than the best HDTV!  Travel into the body of an astronaut or to the far edges of the universe to explore the mysteries of a black holes in brand new programs that will take place every hour on the hour.  Check MOSH’s website – www.moshplanetarium.org – for show times, to preview trailers and to purchase tickets.  

November 11 – FREE Admission for Active & Retired Military – In observance of Veterans Day, all active and retired military will receive free admission to MOSH.  In addition, from November 11 to November 24, veterans will receive $10 off the purchase of a MOSH Membership.  Visitors can enjoy exhibits like Prehistoric Predators, which features 16 animatronic dinosaurs, or take in a show in the new state-of-the-art Bryan-Gooding Planetarium (Tickets are $5 per person).  Museum admission is $10 for adults, $8 for children 3-12, and free for children 2 and under and members.  Planetarium programs are $5 per person, per show.   

November 12 – Cosmic Concert Preview Party – Experience total-sensory entertainment as laser lights, high-def images and digital sound collide to create a Cosmic Concert!  Get a preview of the MOSH Cosmic Concert Series from 8 p.m. to midnight.  Cost is $20 for non-members/$15 for members and includes one drink ticket, one cosmic concert, a live band, rooftop stargazing and access to Museum exhibits.  Additional drinks available for purchase.  Led Zeppelin will play at 9 p.m. followed by Pink Floyd: Dark Side of the Moon at 10 and Pink Floyd: Best of The Wall at 11.  Call 396.MOSH, ext. 240 for tickets or visit www.themosh.org. 

November 13 – NASA Guest Speaker – NASA Aerospace Technology Engineer Antonio Pego will present “NASA’s Role in Astronomy” at 2 p.m. in the Bryan-Gooding Planetarium. Pego will take visitors on a walk through NASA’s history as he explores the first shuttle launch, the Great Observatories, the Kepler Telescope and more.  Pego’s appearance is part of the Grand Opening Celebration of the Bryan-Gooding Planetarium at MOSH taking place November 11 through 14.  Tickets to the lecture are free with paid museum admission and will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.  Museum admission is $10 for adults; $8.50 for military; $8 for children 3-12; and free for children 2 and under and members. 

November 13 - She’s a Scientist?! – See how cool a career in science can be, and leave with a new role model! A special guest female scientist will give girls an inside look into a career in science.  Each program will highlight a different female scientist, her career and her life. Girls will get a chance to interact with a hip female scientist, try an activity that relates to her field, and see what it takes to put yourself in scientist shoes. November 14 – Hubble’s Greatest – The Hubble Space Telescope has unlocked numerous mysteries of the Universe as well as added many new questions. The best – and in some cases – strangest of Hubble discoveries will be examined in “Hubble’s Greatest,” a presentation led by Mike Reynolds, Ph.D., Dean of Liberal Arts, Florida State College of Jacksonville, inside the planetarium at 2 p.m.  Tickets to the lecture are free with paid museum admission and will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.  Museum admission is $10 for adults; $8.50 for military; $8 for children 3-12; and free for children 2 and under and members. 

November 17 – Mother’s Morning Out – This three-hour program, from 9 a.m. to noon, is for 4- and 5-year-olds.  Each program is $15 per child and includes admission to the museum afterwards for both you and your child(ren).  Call 396.MOSH (6674), ext. 256 for required reservations. 

November 18 – Music Under the Stars – Learn about the stars that shine over Jacksonville and then enjoy a live musical performance under the stars of the Bryan-Gooding Planetarium.   Event is from 6 to 10 p.m.; presentation begins at 7 p.m. Admission, which includes museum access, one beer or glass of wine, music presentation, star show, and rooftop stargazing, is $10.  Music provided by arrangement with Friday Musicale.  Call 396.MOSH (6674), ext. 230 for tickets.  

November 19 – Cosmic Concerts – Experience total-sensory entertainment as laser lights, high-def images and digital sound collide to create a Cosmic Concert!  The Beatles at 5 p.m., Led Zeppelin at 6 p.m., Pink Floyd: Dark Side of the Moon at 7 p.m. and Pink Floyd: Best of The Wall at 8 p.m.  Each concert costs $5 per person.  

November 20 – Native American History Day – Did you know November is Native-American History Month?  From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., MOSH will host a festival that will include performances by national recording artist Dave “Whitewolf” Trezak and a lecture by Dr. Keith Ashley, an archaeologist from UNF and guest curator of The Loft Gallery’s current featured exhibit, People of the St. Johns.

November 20 – Dozing With Dinos (New Date!) – Gather your friends, family and sleeping bags for one of the best nights in Jacksonville – a MOSH camp-in!  Overnight campers will be treated to an exclusive program in the new Bryan-Gooding Planetarium, a science show and free time to explore the museum before rolling out their sleeping bags in the museum’s dinosaur exhibit, Prehistoric Predators.  Pizza will be served as a late-night snack and donuts and juice will be on the breakfast menu.  Dozing With Dinos is $30 for children and $20 for adults.  Members receive at $5 discount.  Sign up online at www.themosh.org or by calling 904.396.MOSH (6674), ext. 230.  (Note: This event had been scheduled for November 13 but was rescheduled to accommodate the planetarium opening.)

November 24 –MOSH Closed – MOSH closed in observance of Thanksgiving and will reopen at 10 a.m. on Friday, November 25. 

November 26 – Cosmic Concerts – Experience total-sensory entertainment as laser lights, high-def images and digital sound collide to create a Cosmic Concert!  Holiday Cosmic Concert at 5 p.m., The Beatles at 6 p.m., Classic Rock at 7 p.m. and U2 at 8 p.m.  Each concert costs $5 per person.

December 3 – Cosmic Concerts – Experience total-sensory entertainment as laser lights, high-def images and digital sound collide to create a Cosmic Concert!  Holiday Cosmic Concert at 5 p.m., Led Zeppelin at 6 p.m., Pink Floyd: Dark Side of the Moon at 7 p.m. and Pink Floyd: Best of The Wall at 8 p.m.  Each concert costs $5 per person.  

December 4, 11 & 18 – The Science of Snowflakes: Nano at its Coolest – The Science of Snowflakes is designed to introduce children (and adults) to the idea of nanoscience.  Many Floridians have not experienced snow so we are giving them an opportunity to witness the creation of snowflakes the JEA Science Theater.  We will explain the fascinating process of self-assembly in nature and will answer questions like ‘Why are no two snowflakes alike?’ and ‘Why do snowflakes have 6 sides?’.  Our last snowfall was in 1989.  Aren’t we about due for another one?  Presentations will take place December 4, 11 and 18 at 1:30 p.m.

December 6 – Mommy & Me – This hour-long program, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., is designed for 2- and 3-year-olds and their caregivers.  The program costs $6 (ages 2 and up) and includes admission to the museum afterwards.  Call 396.MOSH (6674), ext. 256 for required reservations.

December 8 – Senior Days – From 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., MOSH will present programming for members of the senior citizen community. The program will include a coffee and cookie reception, a planetarium program, a lunch-and-learn session with a nutritionist (bring your own bag lunch) and free time to explore the museum.  The cost is $6 per senior citizen.  Reservations are required and are based on availability. December 10 – Cosmic Concerts – Experience total-sensory entertainment as laser lights, high-def images and digital sound collide to create a Cosmic Concert!  Holiday Cosmic Concert at 5 p.m., Holiday Cosmic Concert at 6 p.m., Classic Rock at 7 p.m. and Laser Retro at 8 p.m.  Each concert costs $5 per person.

December 20-22 & 27-29 – Winter Camps – Give your children a fun way to spend their holiday break.  Elementary school campers will investigate a new topic each day as they explore museum exhibits, including Prehistoric Predators.  Cost is $35 per day or $180 for all six days.  Call 396.MOSH (6674), ext. 230 for details. 

December 20-22 – SHZAM Camp – The Museum of Science & History has partnered with the Cummer Museum of Art and Gardens and the Jacksonville Zoo & Gardens to offer an enriching, engaging and unique Holiday Camp experience for 8 to 11 years olds.  Our shared theme is Science Investigations.  Students will use science to unravel mysteries in the art world, the animal world and the field of archeology/paleontology.  Students will spend one day at each of the institutions (Monday – The Cummer; Tuesday – Jacksonville Zoo; Wednesday – MOSH).  Cost is $105 for members/$120 for non-members.  For more information, please call 396.MOSH (6674), ext. 230.

JANUARY

January 3 – Mommy & Me – This hour-long program, 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., is designed for 2- and 3-year-olds and their caregivers.  The program costs $6 per person (ages 2 and up) and includes admission to the museum.  Call 396.MOSH (6674), ext. 256 to make a reservation.

January 12 – Senior Day – From 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. MOSH will present special programming for members of the senior citizen community. January 15 – LEGO Building Competition – Contestants will battle it out in a LEGO Building Competition designed to foster creativity and science education.  Call 904.396.MOSH (6674), ext. 230 for details about this popular program.   

January 16 – Sons of the Desert Laurel & Hardy Film Screening – Witness Jacksonville film history as you watch films starring Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy, many of which were filmed right here in Jacksonville.  Admittance is free to MOSH members, “Any Old Port Tent” members, or with paid museum admission.  Films will play immediately following the Sons of the Desert’s monthly meeting held at 2 p.m. 

January 17 – Martin Luther King, Jr. Day – Join MOSH as we honor civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr.  Special activities will take place from 10 a.m. to noon.
