Special Performance of Gypsy to Fund Arts

A special performance of Gypsy will take place at the Limelight Theater at 2p.m. on March 6, 2011. This matinee performance of the musical by Arthur Laurents, Stephen Sondheim, and Jule Styne, will be a part of the 2011 Festival of Muses which celebrates March as Women’s History Month. Tickets are $25 each and may be reserved by contacting Anne Kraft at 794-7455. All tickets will be open seating.

Proceeds from the performance will go towards funding  Jr. ROWITA Fellowships  that will be awarded to three female high school  seniors from St. Johns County, who excel in literary, visual, or performing arts and who plan to pursue further education in these fields.

The Festival of Muses is produced by a coalition of local arts and cultural organizations,  (St. Johns Cultural Council, Jane’s Stories Press, Limelight Theatre, Cyprian Center for Expressive Arts, National PEN Women: St. Augustine Branch, Tale Tellers of St. Augustine)  This year’s festival consists of four Sunday afternoon programs at the Limelight Theatre located at 11 Old Mission Road in St. Augustine. The first program will be the performance of Gypsy, on March 6, 2011. It followed by a different program each week that will showcase artwork, storytelling, poetry, song and dance. Two ROWITA (Recognizing Outstanding Women in the Arts) awards will be presented at each of these Sunday events.

This is the third  year  the ROWITA Coalition has selected local women to receive  ROWITA Awards for their artistic accomplishments, outstanding lifetime achievement and contributions to the arts community in St. Johns County.  The 2011 ROWITA recipients are: Georgie Altenbach, JoAnne Engelbert, Betty Fell, Dr. Mildred (Mili) Koger, Jean Troemel, and Sally Walton.
