It is not an uncommon predicament for boaters. You are out on the water, with family and friends, and suddenly realize there are more children on board than life jackets that fit them.

First, there is the issue of safety. Second is the issue of the law. You do not want to ignore either one.

Now, boaters in the Jacksonville area have a simple solution. The Julington Creek location of the Freedom Boat Club is participating in the BoatU.S. Foundation’s “Life Jacket Loaner Program for Kids.”

The program allows boaters to borrow a child’s life jacket for a day at no charge. Freedom Boat Club Jacksonville, based at Julington Creek, is one of more than 500 locations across the country that is participating in the program, which began in 1997.

“We are committed to boating safety and encouraging best practices on the water,” said Lisa Almeida of the Freedom Boat Club Jacksonville. “We are very pleased that the BoatU.S. Foundation selected us to participate in this worthwhile program.”

Here is how the program works. If a boating family realizes there are not enough properly fitting children’s life jackets on board, they can visit the Freedom Boat Club location at Julington Creek – on land or water -- and sign out an infant, child, or youth jacket for the day. When they have finished for the day, they return it to the same location.

Each year, more than 140,000 life jackets are loaned nationally as part of the BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety & Clean Water program.

“We love to see families involved in boating,” Almeida said. “It is a fun, exhilarating activity. But we want to see that people are safe, properly equipped and trained.”
