Under the direction of Luis Abella, Peter and the Wolf, presents the 1936 classic tale, set to music by Sergei Prokofiev, of a young boy and his animal friends as they come face to face with a dangerous wolf,.  Peter’s Grandfather warns him not to go into the woods and the adventure begins when Peter (Aidan Maxwell) ignores his grandfather’s warning. Peter and his friends, the cat (Clea Calvin), the duck (C.J. Katz) and the bird (Kjarstie Corry), encounter the ferocious wolf, which is pursued by a party of hunters, in the woods.  Each character is represented by a different musical instrument (violin, flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, French horn and percussion.)

“Peter and The Wolf is a wonderful introduction for children to the arts and especially to classical ballet,” explained SACB Publicity Manager, Joy D’Elia.  “The dancers use movement and music to personify their characters and they are each paired with a different instrument of the orchestra. Audiences of all ages will enjoy this timeless tale and perhaps even learn a lesson or two about listening to the advice of our elders!”

Excerpts from the ballet, Paquita, will be performed during the second half of the program.  This classical ballet tells the story of the girl, Paquita, who was rescued by gypsies as a young child.  Years later, while travelling and dancing with a gypsy band, she returns to her Spanish home where she learns her true identity.

The Saint Augustine Community Ballet is a nonprofit performing arts organization. It was founded by Luis Abella in 2010 to provide high quality ballet performances to the community, as well as offering local dancers the experience and exposure to the world of professional dance. Their first production was “The Nutcracker” in December 2010. They will present two major ballet performances each year, with auditions open to all dancers seeking  performance experience.
