Jacksonville, Florida – Of the sixty-five Freedom Boat Club franchises, this year’s Guardian Award has been presented to Lisa Almeida and Kevin Seelig, owners of the Freedom Boat Club of Jacksonville and the Freedom Boat Club of St. Augustine.

Local Julington Business Owner Raises Money for Special Olympics

Local business owner, Lisa Almeida of the Freedom Boat Club and her professional dance partner, Shay Dixon of Boleros Cultural Arts Center, danced their way into the hearts and minds of the celebrity judges and the audience at this year’s edition of Dancing with the Stars Jacksonville. Almeida raised a total of $10,650 to benefit Special Olympics and finished in 2nd place.  The event was held at Jacoby Symphony Hall at the Times Union Center for Performing Arts, and benefited the Special Olympics.

Free Boat Rides for Florida Baptist Children's Home

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- On Wednesday, August 15th, the Jacksonville branch of the Freedom Boat Club is pairing up with 121 Financial Credit Union and taking 40 children from the Florida Baptist Children’s Homes (FBCH) for a day of adventure on the river. The students will be treated to a variety of activities including exploring local waterways, searching for manatees and wildlife, recreation in a park, and  enjoying a picnic lunch on the water.

 “I am so excited to have the ability to provide the boating experience for those who otherwise might not have the chance” said Lisa Almeida, who manages the Jacksonville affiliate of the Freedom Boat Club. Almeida adds, “ It’s great to have organizations like FBCH and 121 to team up with so that together we can provide a 3-way support system for charities”.

$2 million in grants to benefit Florida homeless shelters

 

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Department of Children and Families Secretary David Wilkins announced more than $2 million in grants that will benefit community homeless shelters throughout the state.

Brooks Rehabilitation Employees and Medical Teams International Helping Disabled in Haiti

Medical Teams International will send four teams of physical and occupational therapists from Brooks Rehabilitation Hospital in Jacksonville, Florida to Haiti throughout the spring and summer of 2012, in order to provide rehabilitative care to those still suffering in the aftermath of the devastating earthquake. The volunteer therapists will work with Medical Teams International’s Haiti Advantage program in Les Cayes, providing care in the outpatient prosthetics and orthotics clinic and well as the local hospital.

3rd Annual Spring-4-A-Cure Relay slated for March 24

This year’s Spring 4-A-Cure 5K Walk/Run will be held on Saturday, March 24, beginning at 8:30 a.m. The race will begin and end at the St. Augustine Shores Riverview Club.

All proceeds from entry fees will be donated to the American Cancer Society. The race is being sponsored by the Mason Manatee Relay for Life team.

Awards will be given to the overall female and male winners. Recognition will also be given to the top three finishers in various age categories. Ample parking will be provided for all participants.
