Local Julington Business Owner Raises Money for Special Olympics

Local business owner, Lisa Almeida of the Freedom Boat Club and her professional dance partner, Shay Dixon of Boleros Cultural Arts Center, danced their way into the hearts and minds of the celebrity judges and the audience at this year’s edition of Dancing with the Stars Jacksonville. Almeida raised a total of $10,650 to benefit Special Olympics and finished in 2nd place.  The event was held at Jacoby Symphony Hall at the Times Union Center for Performing Arts, and benefited the Special Olympics.

Lisa Almeida, also known as the Dancing Boatanista, wowed the audience when her dress was ripped off to reveal her beautiful custom made red dance costume, while dancing a combination of Lyrical Ballet and the Hustle.  There was glitz and glam everywhere.  The contestants were judged by three guest judges using paddles to score the constants from one to ten. “Dancing to raise money for such a great charity, was just pure joy”, Almeida said.

The judging was determined by 50% funds raised and 50% dancing, including voting that night.  Lisa raised another $3,000 at the event through people voting for her. This was 86% of the votes that night. She then danced home with the coveted mirror ball trophy.
