The Salvation Army of NE Florida Assists Alabama

The Salvation Army of NE Florida has deployed 2 mobile canteens and a team of volunteers and staff to help assist in the relief and recovery efforts in areas most affected from recent storms.

The Salvation Army canteen (kitchens on wheels) from Jacksonville left on Saturday, April 30 to assist with disaster relief and recovery in the raven stricken areas of Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Disaster volunteers from Jacksonville are assisting the Jacksonville canteen. Staff and volunteers from The Salvation Army Orlando Area Command are manning the St. Augustine canteen which traveled to Birmingham, Alabama on Saturday to assist victims and emergency personnel affected by the recent storms. Salvation Army deployments are typically 14 days.

“The Salvation Army is about bringing comfort to people when they need it the most,” said Paul Stasi, Social Services Director for The Salvation Army of NE Florida. “In the late 90's, Central Florida was devastated by a series of storms that took many lives and Floridians came together and supported our efforts. We are asking for that same support as we head into our disaster relief effort.”

The recent storms have destroyed buildings and shattered lives. Salvation Army disaster response teams have been deployed to 30 communities across six states. To date, more than 300 people have lost their lives while many more have suffered injuries and face catastrophic property damage. Hundreds of thousands are currently without electricity.
