185 Acre Fire Near Greenbriar Road

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A woods fire is burning in the northwest part of St. Johns County, starting midday on Saturday.

It's located south of Greenbriar Road near Bartram Trail High School.  Deputies are blocking traffic on Greenbriar Road between State Road 13 and Roberts Road.

The Division of Forestry is working the fire with assistance from the St. Johns County Fire Department.

According to Sgt. Chuck Mulligan with the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office, the fire has burned about 185 acres and it is 70 percent contained as of 11:00 p.m. Saturday.  There are neighborhoods close-by, but so far only woods have burned.

Mulligan said this is the same fire which started in the area Friday by a lightning strike. Saturday's fire is a rekindle.  Mulligan said homes are not in danger of the fire.

The fire is sending plumes of smoke into the air.  One woman who lives in Julington Creek said she has seen ash from the fire at her home.

Ash can be seen flying as far as Mandarin.
