Property Tax Break for Florida's Deployed Military

Property Tax Break for Florida's Deployed Military

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A property tax credit is being afforded Florida's military personnel who own homes and served overseas last year.  The only stipulation is the deployment must be connected to either Enduring Freedom, Iraqi Freedom or New Dawn.

The Duval County Property Appraiser's Office has been been getting phone calls and taking information since the forms needed are not yet available.

The benefit of the tax break can be sizable since it is based on time out of country in 2010.

"If the service person was away for the entire year they can be exempt totally and not pay any property taxes," said Dana Clark who heads up exemptions at Duval Property Appraiser's Office.

The deadline to apply is June 1, but late applications are being accepted.

Five Teens Hospitalized for Suspected 'Bath Salt' Ingestion

ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. -- Five teenagers have been hospitalized for ingesting what deputies believe to be a type of bath salts banned in Florida earlier this year.

According to the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office, the incident began Saturday at a home on North Lake Cunningham Avenue in Fruit Cove.

Neighbors said Monday they were stunned by the incident.

"It's just a very unfortunate incident that happened to some pretty decent kids," said Clyde Ewing who lives across the street from one of the teens.  "[It's] just really upsetting."

The father of a 17-year-old reported that his son was out of control; the teen fought his father and several deputies as they tried to secure him.

St. Johns County Offers Law Handbook for Teens

ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. -- A year-long project aimed at helping youngsters stay out of trouble has culminated with a new handbook.

The St. Johns County Sheriff's Office, the State Attorney's Office, St. Johns County School Board and the PACT Prevention Coalition worked together to create the "Know the Law" Handbook for middle and high school students in the county.

The four agencies contributed experts who spent the past year researching and writing to come up with relevant, important information.

They want students to take the handbook home and discuss it with their parents.

Drugs, alcohol, tobacco, parties, weapons, cyber crimes, gangs and even driving are covered in the handbook, which explores the consequences of poor choices and actions.

Four Loko Lurks at High School Parties

Four Loko Lurks at High School Parties

Most of us remember the high school party movies of the 80s. Party mischief included making a dream girl out of a doll, the most popular girl in school getting a bad haircut and an entrepreneurial freshman flashing an upper classman’s panties for a buck a peep.

Unfortunately, it’s not the 80s.

High school parties today involve a whole new breed of drugs and alcohol, including Four Loko, nicknamed by some, “blackout in a can.”
